A good corned beef reuben can now be found in Singapore. New York style deli Sascha & Sons is serving up all the goodies – chopped liver, lox, bagels and blintzes. Where other cafes didn’t quite get the balance right, this one is spot on.

I came for brunch and tried the pastrami knish, corn beef reuben and meat loaf sandwich. The pastrami knish was really good – this is not the potato based knish you usually see in New York, this is better. It’s a flaky, buttery puff pastry that envelops the tender pastrami and is served with an onion and meat gravy.

Both sandwiches were good. Firstly, they were served on a good rye bread that was just the right thickness, grilled and nicely slathered with mustard. Secondly, the corned beef and meatloaf were both moist. This was particularly notable for the meatloaf which can be dry. The reuben had just the right quantum of sauerkraut and swiss cheese. The meatloaf sandwich had tomato chutney. The sandwiches are served with coleslaw and quintessential pickles.

At this stage, I’d say that the portions are pretty generous. These sandwiches are the “regular” size and they also come in large and extra large. So while I really wanted to have a blintz for dessert, it was beyond me. I also want to try the New York cheesecake – I’ve not seen one that is close in Singapore yet.

For the three items, my bill was under SGD55 (excluding drinks). Given the quality and portion of the food, I thought is was actually a good deal especially for an eatery located on Orchard Road (Sascha & Sons is in the Mandarin Gallery).
Just to nitpick on my part, it did take more than 20 minutes to receive our food after ordering (not very New York). But not much more and this is within most restaurant standards. So, on the whole – a big thumb’s up!

While it just opened recently, its plus points mean that reservations are going to be necessary especially for weekend brunch/lunch. Sascha & Sons is open daily from 10am.
