Chicago Athletic Association – New Hotel has Great Food & Bars, but So-So Rooms

Chicago roof top bars

Update: I stayed at the CAA again more recently and am happy to say that they have brightened up the rooms.

Chicago's newest hotel, which takes its name from the refurbished historical Chicago Athletic Association building where it is housed, has great bars and eateries but somewhat disappointing rooms. I chose this one-month old hotel as it's well located across the road from the Millennial Park. After noting that it has been featured in the latest issue of Vanity Fair,...

Lollapalooza – Concert for the Taste Buds

Singapore tapas

Update: Lollapalooza has closed.

Newcomer to Singapore’s tapas dining scene Lollapalooza is a class act. Every course was tasty and nicely cooked while the staff were among the sharpest and most knowledgeable that I’ve encountered in Singapore recently. The menu is also fairly varied offering a good selection to choose from which also makes it a bit difficult to define the cuisine - so let’s just say it’s Mediterranean. The drawbacks are slight with one being a rather uninspiring...

Cote d’Azur – Escape the Hordes, Head for the Hills

Cote d'Azur

The Cote d'Azur is much more than just the resort beach towns of Cannes, Nice or St Tropez. So, if you need to escape the hordes, the hills above the shoreline contain scenic medieval hill towns which can be easily visited in a day trip. &Sons – The Right Formula of Quick Bites in the CBD

&Sons bacaro

I can see myself coming down to the CBD on a weekend just to  eat at &Sons, a casual Italian restaurant serving really good quality food at decent prices. While the weekday lunchtime menu is of particularly decent value, we were especially happy with the a la carte pasta and appetisers. Portions are a decent size so that we could share one appetiser among four of us - a great way to try more from the menu.

&Sons refer to themselves as a "bacaro" - a name normally linked to...

One Day in the Cap d’Antibes

Antibes port

Despite the rainy start, our morning in Antibes followed by an afternoon walk around the cape ended up being my favourite day in France's Cote d'Azur. Like many of the towns along this coast, Antibes is a fishing village but unlike its better known neighbours like Cannes and St Tropez, it's largely devoid of the glitzy commercialisation. And after our afternoon walk around the scenic cape (Cap d'Antibes), we celebrated with champagne at the majestic Hotel du...
