Checking Out the SEA Games

SEA Games

The SEA Games (biennial Olympic type competition among South East Asian countries) are going on in Singapore so I thought I'd go see some of the events. Mainly due to the potential to get some good photos, I went down to Marina Bay to check out the dragon boat races. Besides the city skyline backdrop, the tents set up for the Games as well as the ongoing DBS Marina Regatta gave it a carnival like atmosphere. So I thought it'd be fun just to share the following...

The Deep at the Art Science Museum

The Deep Exhibit
Looking at what lurks in the Deep

I checked out the new exhibit at the Art Science Museum – The Deep showcases the odd sea creatures that thrive in the deep oceans. The entire exhibit is done in darkness in keeping with the theme and also so that the luminescence of some of the exhibits can be seen. While the preserved creatures are devoid of colour – they didn’t have much colour to begin with – it was still really interesting to be able to see them in actuality. It’s an enlightening exhibit. The Art Science Museum is at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands. Find out more on their website: http://www.marinabaysands.com/museum/the-deep.html

Singapore – A Walk and Photos Around Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is a great place to come and get some photos of some of Singapore's iconic landmarks. And when it gets too hot, the two conservatories are welcome places to duck into to cool down. Ideally, I'd say to come early in the morning before it gets too hot for the best photo opportunities.

One of the walks that can be done is to take an easy ten minute stroll out to the Marina Barrage. I came here early one morning to see if I could get some good shots of the Singapore...

Tamashii Robataya – Man was Meant to Cook With Fire

Tamashii robatayaki

No matter the cuisine, man was meant to grill. Tamashii Robataya specializes in robatayaki - the Japanese slow grilling of fresh produce and meats over charcoal. Its specialties include a very nicely cooked Kinki fish, and a wonderful grilled beef with rice (saga gyu don) and truffle. As with many of Singapore's restaurants serving high quality food, the question is going to be on the value perception as dining here may not be cheap.

I enjoyed my dinner at Tamashii Robataya and I...

Amsterdam – A Bike is a Great Way to Spend a Half Day

Amsterdam

Summer in the city brings about more possibilities and one of the nicest things we did on a visit to Amsterdam was to spend a half day cycling into the surrounding countryside. The Netherlands is pretty ideal cycling country, in my view, as it's flat so it's great for us who simply want a leisurely ride and not the Tour de France. So we joined a guided group and headed out.

We chose a ride out to the Waterland area north of Amsterdam, which is around a 35 km return journey. There are...
