Meat Smith – Not Quite Smokin’ Hot

Meat Smith Singapore

The frustrating thing about Meat Smith, in my view, is that it can be really good but at this stage the taste is a bit lacking in some dishes. If this can be tweaked, then I expect there will be even more reason to return. Nonetheless, if you work in the area and are looking for a decent lunch or after work drinks, this is not a bad place to go.

Angus Beef Rib

The star item on the menu should be the Black Angus beef rib, which is apparently slow cooked for 14 hours. Unfortunately, while the meat is tender, the marinade seems to be missing something. The meat was surprisingly a bit bland. We also had the half chicken, which was nicely cooked and I would say the taste wasn’t bad. Unfortunately, we didn’t get around to trying the beef brisket, which I must come back for.

Very addictive Chicharonnes

My favourite item ended up being the chicharonnes (deep fried pork skin) – fantastic with drinks. It was a big portion for SGD5, not bad. The other starter – kimchi hushpuppies – was decent but a bit small. But then again, I’m used to seeing bigger, denser hushpuppies. The sides that we had – a som tum slaw and mustard potato salad were okay.

As for dessert, there was just one choice which is likely to upset dessert fiends. However, the one item – The cobbler of the day –  which was apple served optionally with a smoked vanilla ice cream, was good.

Our meal cost SGD111 in total, of which the beef rib was SGD48. We shared the food among three of us. Meat Smith has lunch specials – for example, a beef brisket sandwich with a cider or beer priced at SGD25.

Overall, I think there’s promise in Meat Smith. I am planning to come to try it again – the sandwiches (particularly the Nashville fried chicken) looked good. Also they had an nduja mac & cheese that I missed seeing on the board of their specials for the day. I will also give the beef rib another chance – just to see if it was maybe just an off day.

Meat Smith is located on Telok Ayer St. (no. 167-169), closer to the junction with McCallum St.
