The Lighthouse – Good Pasta and Views, Meat Courses Fall Short

Mixed fried seafood

I went to check out The Lighthouse, the rooftop restaurant at The Fullerton Hotel, as I've always liked Chef Carlo Marengoni's cooking. I also wanted to try some of its southern Italian dishes to see how it compared to my experience from a recent visit to Sicily. In short, I enjoyed the starters and the pasta dishes but our meat courses disappointed especially when compared to what Chef Carlo used to offer at his own restaurant.

Firstly, the views in the evening from The...

More From the SEA Games – Boxing and Sepak Takraw

I went to watch the SEA Games boxing semifinals here in Singapore and got an added bonus from catching the closing games of a Sepak Takraw match between Malaysia and Indonesia. It was good to see a couple of the Singaporean boxers make the finals, especially as they're coached by someone I know, and there were certainly some impressive Filipino and Thai boxers. But it's the acrobatics of Sepak Takraw - which is like volleyball played by three players and using only feet (the ball was...

Sascha & Sons – Oy! This One Cuts the Mustard

New York deli in Singapore

A good corned beef reuben can now be found in Singapore. New York style deli Sascha & Sons is serving up all the goodies - chopped liver, lox, bagels and blintzes. Where other cafes didn't quite get the balance right, this one is spot on.

I came for brunch and tried the pastrami knish, corn beef reuben and  meat loaf sandwich. The pastrami knish was really good - this is not the potato based knish you usually see in New York, this is better. It's a flaky, buttery puff pastry...

Checking Out the SEA Games

SEA Games

The SEA Games (biennial Olympic type competition among South East Asian countries) are going on in Singapore so I thought I'd go see some of the events. Mainly due to the potential to get some good photos, I went down to Marina Bay to check out the dragon boat races. Besides the city skyline backdrop, the tents set up for the Games as well as the ongoing DBS Marina Regatta gave it a carnival like atmosphere. So I thought it'd be fun just to share the following...

The Deep at the Art Science Museum

The Deep Exhibit
Looking at what lurks in the Deep

I checked out the new exhibit at the Art Science Museum – The Deep showcases the odd sea creatures that thrive in the deep oceans. The entire exhibit is done in darkness in keeping with the theme and also so that the luminescence of some of the exhibits can be seen. While the preserved creatures are devoid of colour – they didn’t have much colour to begin with – it was still really interesting to be able to see them in actuality. It’s an enlightening exhibit. The Art Science Museum is at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands. Find out more on their website: http://www.marinabaysands.com/museum/the-deep.html
