Tamashii Robataya – Man was Meant to Cook With Fire

Tamashii robatayaki

No matter the cuisine, man was meant to grill. Tamashii Robataya specializes in robatayaki - the Japanese slow grilling of fresh produce and meats over charcoal. Its specialties include a very nicely cooked Kinki fish, and a wonderful grilled beef with rice (saga gyu don) and truffle. As with many of Singapore's restaurants serving high quality food, the question is going to be on the value perception as dining here may not be cheap.

I enjoyed my dinner at Tamashii Robataya and I...

Amsterdam – A Bike is a Great Way to Spend a Half Day

Amsterdam

Summer in the city brings about more possibilities and one of the nicest things we did on a visit to Amsterdam was to spend a half day cycling into the surrounding countryside. The Netherlands is pretty ideal cycling country, in my view, as it's flat so it's great for us who simply want a leisurely ride and not the Tour de France. So we joined a guided group and headed out.

We chose a ride out to the Waterland area north of Amsterdam, which is around a 35 km return journey. There are...

Tokyo’s Sasagin – Great Food and Sake in this Izakaya

Sasagin Izakaya

There is a lot of good food in Japan - essentially places that mainly locals go and Sasagin would be one such neighbourhood izakaya. Izakaya, in my mind, are like pubs or tapas bars where the focus is on the drinks and generally decent food happens to be served as an accompaniment. In Sasagin's case, the food is also excellent while sake is the owner's forte.

A Japanese foodie friend recommended we come to Sasagin - good food without having to pay a lot for it. While not much english...

Kyoto – One Day in the Eastern Districts

Silver Pavilion

The main sites to visit in Kyoto’s eastern districts include the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) and Eikando Zenrin-ji. The Philosopher’s Walk, is an easy path to stroll down, linking Ginkaku-ji to Eikando Zenren-ji and another temple Nanzen-ji. This makes spending one day in this area a nicely contained itinerary.

If I had to rank the top sites to visit in this area, they would be Shugakuin, Eikando temple, and Ginkaku-ji. So if you’re short on time, make...

Paris – Just Hanging Out in Montmartre

Montmartre

To be honest, I've not done much sightseeing in Paris for some time. So on a recent trip, I took a stroll around Montmartre on a late afternoon just to enjoy the sunny day. It was actually really nice just to sit on the steps of the Sacre Coeur, take a look at some of the unique stores and then have a good dinner at Le Coq Rico.

Paris has long been my favourite European city - largely due to my interest in art history - and very much because of its bridges, architecture and its...
