Seattle’s Fonda La Catrina – Trendy Mexican in the Industrial Chic Georgetown

Margaritas

Sitting in Fonda La Catrina on a hot Sunday evening reminded me of sweating over a good plate of noodles or rice in one of Malaysia's or Singapore's hawker stalls. The difference of course was that I was in Seattle and the food was Mexican. Also, Fonda La Catrina is notably trendier, located in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood where former warehouses house some "industrial-chic" eateries and bars.

Given the hot day, we made a beeline to the drinks list - I had a strawberry and...

Seattle’s Community Gardens – Beacon Food Forest

What a great idea - a neighborhood garden run wholly by volunteers where people and kids can help themselves to the fruits and veggies. It not only beautifies what would have been unused municipal land but creates a useable output as well. The Beacon Hill Food Forest takes the Seattle wide P-Patch Community Garden project a step further in size and by incorporating gardening based on a woodland ecosystem.

My friend Ross and his friend Brad (aka Kenji) introduced me to the Beacon Hill...

Miller’s Guild – Good Sides and Seafood, Main Event Lacking

Miller's Guild bread

I went to Miller's Guild in downtown Seattle, a restaurant known for its huge wood-fired grill, recently. It was my second time back at the restaurant after coming here last September. Unfortunately, I think I liked it more the first time around as the signature thick slabs of steak were not as tender as I'd anticipated.

Seattle’s Chihuly Exhibit – Glass Distinction

Seattle Center Chihuly exhibit

The Dale Chihuly exhibit, Garden and Glass, at the Seattle Center is a must see. The glassworks are a feast of color and design and while I've seen his chandeliers before in building lobbies, to see the sculptures in a garden is special. The large scale works are also incredible - an explosion of color and shapes against dark walls and a black mirrored surface adds to the drama. My tip would be to visit the exhibit an hour or two before it closes at night - the colors really stand out in...

Seattle – Take a Ferry to Bainbridge Island

Bainbridge Island ferry

For a view of Seattle's city skyline, I took a ferry to Bainbridge Island. Going on a Saturday morning also meant I could check out the farmers' market - a big plus as I discovered a most amazing cinnamon bun. The ferry ride is an easy 35 minutes and you also get sight of Mt Rainier looming over the sound on the way.

I'm in Seattle for a week visiting relatives and with the unusual run of dry weather, keen to take a bunch of photos. One of the nicest views of the city can be seen...
