Sushi Shikon – Sushi Yoshitake’s Excellent 3-Star Hong Kong Outpost

Sushi Shikon's uni sushi

To be awarded three Michelin stars anywhere is quite a big deal and I was all the more curious about this sushi-ya in Hong Kong to see if it measured up to those in Japan. It was only at the end of the meal that I found out that Shikon is the Hong Kong branch of Tokyo's Sushi Yoshitake, also 3-starred. Happily, I think Shikon measures up to its Tokyo parent although given the relative cost, I think the Tokyo original is more affordable.

I'd actually been to Sushi Yoshitake back in...

Boruto – For a Sake Fix with Decent Food

Boruto Singapore tapas

My friends and I wanted to have a decent meal but nothing too long and too precious so we dropped in on Boruto for good sake based drinks and decent bites. This izakaya is about its sake drinks, homemade umeshu and largely uncomplicated tapas. Enjoyable dishes include its nicely grilled spare rib, stuffed chicken wing and deep fried pork belly. My main gripe is probably its downstairs seating which felt bit too spartan.

Boruto is the sister restaurant of Tamashii Robataya (see...

Singapore – Ashino at Chijmes has Great Sushi

Red sea urchin sushi

Ashino is the latest in high-end specialty sushi restaurants in Singapore but is unique as some of its fish is cured leaving it tender but tasty. Much like counterparts in Japan, this restaurant only seats ten diners around a sushi master. While I also like the other sushi places in town, I think that Ashino ranks highest for me in terms of the quality of its sushi.

Sushi chef Taku Ashino, who was formerly at Marina Bay Sands' Hide Yamamoto, now has full rein to unleash his sushi in a...

Tamashii Robataya – Man was Meant to Cook With Fire

Tamashii robatayaki

No matter the cuisine, man was meant to grill. Tamashii Robataya specializes in robatayaki - the Japanese slow grilling of fresh produce and meats over charcoal. Its specialties include a very nicely cooked Kinki fish, and a wonderful grilled beef with rice (saga gyu don) and truffle. As with many of Singapore's restaurants serving high quality food, the question is going to be on the value perception as dining here may not be cheap.

I enjoyed my dinner at Tamashii Robataya and I...

Tokyo’s Fuku – Good Value Yakitori

Fuku Yakitori

Yakitori was never in my list of priority foods to eat in Tokyo. There are so many yakitori joints where I live and the ones beneath the railway tracks near Ginza were never that great. But Fuku's yakitori is unlike others (due in part to quality ingredients) and is proof that you can eat really well in Tokyo and for very reasonably as well.

For travellers to Tokyo, Fuku is also relatively visitor friendly. The owner speaks very good english and was able to provide more details...
