Orvieto is a well preserved hill town in southwestern Umbria located almost midway between Siena and Rome. Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci International Airport) is around a 90 minute drive from Orvieto.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2088\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2088\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/2015\/07\/14\/en-route-to-rome-a-pit-stop-in-orvieto\/orvieto-2015-04-12-orvieto-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2088\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2088\" src=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Orvieto-2015-04-12-Orvieto-4-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Orvieto's charming streets\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Orvieto-2015-04-12-Orvieto-4-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Orvieto-2015-04-12-Orvieto-4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the picturesque lanes in Orvieto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Orvieto is perched on top of a &#8220;tufo&#8221; (huge lump\u00a0of volcanic rock) and commands a dominant position above the surrounding valley. We drove up to the town\u00a0and found ample parking in one of the multi level parking lots surrounding the center. It was probably just a 10-15 minute walk to the historic town from our car park. There are a number of cute and quaint stores, not to mention historical buildings, to pop into along with an exploration\u00a0of the town&#8217;s Etruscan caves and tunnels. Given its proximity to Rome, it may be a good spot to spend the night before having to catch a flight out the next morning.
