However, the tourist information office in Zumaia looked at us and recommended that we just walk out to the view point. I guess we looked\u00a0that unprepared. Nonetheless, I&#8217;m grateful for their advice because the seemingly short 4km excursion actually kept us occupied for two hours.<\/p>\n<p>The Flysch Route gets its name from a particular rock formation in northwestern Spain called flysch. The rocks here are actually formed from layers of sandstone and shale &#8211; alternating &#8211; so that there are very distinct layers in the cliffs. Following a leafy, tree lined road uphill took us to a lookout point &#8211; but, it was not the one we wanted (we missed a left turn somewhere). There&#8217;s a staircase down to the water from which we got\u00a0a closer view of the rock formations. The path back is easy, there&#8217;s a lower road so we didn&#8217;t need to climb back up the hill to San Telmo. From a bus stop in town, we took a very pleasant ride back to San Sebastian.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-724\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/2015\/05\/25\/northwest-spain-cliff-notes-on-the-flysch-route\/flysch-cliff-walk-zumaia-2015-04-21-21\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-724\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-724\" src=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Flysch-cliff-walk-Zumaia-2015-04-21-21-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Flysch Route\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Flysch-cliff-walk-Zumaia-2015-04-21-21-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Flysch-cliff-walk-Zumaia-2015-04-21-21-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Too bad we couldn&#8217;t walk further on<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Getting to Zumaia:<\/strong> Zumaia is just a short 30\u00a0minute car ride from San Sebastian or you could take a bus, which is\u00a0twice as long\u00a0but is a more scenic coastal trip. The train is also an alternative but the schedule is less frequent.\u00a0\u00a0If you take a\u00a0taxi, just be aware that it will cost around EUR50, while the bus is less than EUR2.50 per person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Useful tip:<\/strong> The tourist office in Zumaia is located in Kantauri Plaza, behind a green patch opposite the marina. They have good maps of the town and the various walks in Zumaia. And they will have advice on where the bus stops are as well as the schedule to take the bus back to San Sebastian if you do not have your own car.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time allocation:<\/strong> Given the travel time, it&#8217;s probably best to allocate around three to four hours for this excursion depending on whether you have your own car. Taking the bus will take longer.
