This makes it easier for visitors like me who may have a few hours to spare and don&#8217;t want to spend the whole time shopping. I checked out one of the suggested routes recently that took me through the city&#8217;s historical lanes and arcades.<\/p>\n<p>The Melbourne Visitor (tourism) Centre\u00a0in Federation Square is the best place to start. I picked up a map that outlined the route &#8211; &#8220;Arcades and Lanes&#8221; &#8211; I wanted to do and which also had info on the highlights. This walk is just 2.5 km and the map indicates around 1.5 hours walking time. The first sight, besides Federation Sq. of course, is Flinders Street Station.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_978\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-978\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/2015\/05\/30\/melbourne-city-walk-arcades-and-lanes\/25-mar-20152015-03-20-version-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-978\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-978\" src=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-Version-2--1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Flinders St. Station Reflection\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-Version-2--1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-Version-2--300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reflection of Flinders St. Station in the window of Jackson and Young<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Crossing the road took me to a old pub &#8211; Young and Jackson&#8217;s. As one of the other passers by said, &#8220;it&#8217;s New Orleans&#8221;. It contrasted nicely with the lunch time crowd of office workers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-989\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/2015\/05\/30\/melbourne-city-walk-arcades-and-lanes\/25-mar-20152015-03-20-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-989\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-989\" src=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Melbourne cafes\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bright and buzzy Centre Place<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Further up is Centre Place, another buzzing lane full of cafes and one of Melbourne&#8217;s most colourful places, in my opinion. So it was very tempting to do a bit of shopping &#8211; which is what I ended up doing. Unfortunately by now the sun was high overhead making taking good photos really difficult. Niagara Lane has a row of very well preserved red brick warehouses. You can see the hooks hanging off the tops of the buildings &#8211; which would have been how they hoisted things up in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Cobblestoned Hardware Lane was a little lacklustre in that I think it was already past the peak lunch hour and so the street seemed quiet. I ended up taking a photo of a reflection in one of the windows. However, I did walk past\u00a0a very interesting narrow lane that had been completely covered with\u00a0graffiti.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_981\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-981\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/2015\/05\/30\/melbourne-city-walk-arcades-and-lanes\/25-mar-20152015-03-20-8\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-981\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-981\" src=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-8-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Melbourne lanes\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-8-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-Mar-20152015-03-20-8-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great graffiti on a narrow lane<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From here, the walk heads back down toward where I started. Before then, I found Howley Place and Capitol Arcade\u00a0and\u00a0I had a great cup of coffee from the\u00a0tiny, hole-in-the-wall\u00a0Switchboard Cafe, which is in Manchester Unity Arcade. I think it was the ideal spot to have a rest since I was just one road over from being back at Flinders St. Station.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-979\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/2015\/05\/30\/melbourne-city-walk-arcades-and-lanes\/30-may-20152015-03-20-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-979\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-979\" src=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/30-May-20152015-03-20-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Tiny Cafe Melbourne\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/30-May-20152015-03-20-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/30-May-20152015-03-20-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Really good coffee at the tiny Switchboard Cafe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All in, I probably spent just over two\u00a0hours on this walk given my shopping diversion, all the photos and a pause to listen to some jazz.
